History
|
|
The Lahore University of Management Sciences
(LUMS) is a national university, established by sponsors belonging to the
country’s leading private and public sector corporations. The goal of the
sponsors is to develop an institution, which would provide rigorous
academic and intellectual training and a viable alternative to education
comparable to leading universities across the world.
|
|
|
|
The National Management Foundation, the
sponsoring body of the University was incorporated in November 1984 and
was granted a charter by the Government of Pakistan for establishing the
University, in March 1985, with the president of Pakistan being designated
the role of the University’s Chancellor. Through this charter, the
University was given the legal right to establish degree-granting
programmes. The Board of Trustees, the policy-making body of the
University, comprises leading members of the business community, academia
and representatives of the government. The principal functions of the
Board are to set broad policy guidelines and to review the operations of
the University. The Board of Governors, being the sponsors of LUMS, raises
the necessary funds for the University’s operation and maintenance. Many
board members are representatives of the business community and form a
crucial link between the University and the industry.

In 1986 LUMS launched its Business School with
a world-class MBA programme (recently the School has been renamed as the
Suleman Dawood School of Business). In 1994, LUMS started a BSc Honours
Programme in Economics and Computer Science. Over Subsequent years this
evolved to include more specializations. In 1996, the School of Arts and
Sciences was formed to oversee the undergraduate programme at LUMS. Later
on, masters programmes in Economics, Computer Science and Computer
Engineering were also added, followed by the launch of doctoral programmes
in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Mathematics and the
Executive MBA programme. In 2002, a five year, integrated, BA-LL.B degree
was also included to the list of programmes offered by the school.

|
|
|
As the programmes and departments expanded, it
became apparent that the scope and diversity of the programmes offered by
the School demanded more meaningful division and focus. Hence, in 2006,
School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law has been established that
oversees the Social Sciences, Economics and Law Departments, and the
School of Science and Engineering, launched in 2008, oversees Mathematics,
Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Electrical Engineering.

Life at LUMS
|
|
LUMS is located in the most historical and
culturally rich city in Pakistan. Lahore, also the center of higher
education in Pakistan, offers a vibrant, intellectually welcoming and
diverse environment. It is a city of over 6.5 million people and a great
starting point from which to begin to know Pakistan. Lahore has a small
but vibrant expatriate community; over twenty consulate offices are based
in the city and much of the international cultural life revolves around
them. There is an active French Center, a well patronized American Club
and a German cultural center located in the Annemarie Schimmel Haus. In
addition, local cultural life is intimately linked to the Alhamra Arts
Council, the historic Old City as well as the numerous exhibitions and art
galleries.

The University premises are located in Defense
Housing Authority (DHA). In keeping with Lahore’s architectural history,
the LUMS campus too echoes the city’s traditional red brick exteriors. The
campus is constructed along uncomplicated straight exteriors, extended
rectangular arches and a central octagon from which the buildings fan out.
Its layout is in keeping with what LUMS aims to do and has already done,
i.e. cementing the traditions of Lahore’s educational institutions of the
past but always looking ahead, anticipating change and going forward to
meet it.
|
|
|
DHA is one of the main suburbs in Lahore and
also one of its newest. Close to the airport (6 km away) as well as the
center of the historical part of the city, DHA offers a wide range of
services, shops, and restaurants including bowling alleys, ice-cream
parlors, and cafes. Many of the best private schools in the city are
located in the vicinity. The majority of them offer a high school
education culminating in the University of Cambridge (GCE A-level) exams
that are administered by the
British Council. A number of schools also follow the American high
school system. Many of these schools offer a wide range of
extra-curricular activities include drama, debate and competitive sports.

LUMS offers on-campus housing to its faculty.
There are six faculty residential blocks providing high quality 2-3
bedroom apartments which are allocated on a first-come first-serve basis.
There are also a number of guest apartments available for visiting
faculty. A significant share of the faculty, including most international
faculty, lives on campus which forms an integral part of the LUMS
community. The open spaces and child friendly facilities make it an
attractive and secure environment for young families.
|
|
|
The campus offers a wide range of amenities
for both students and faculty. Besides the academic and residential
buildings, there is a new sports facility with excellent tennis, squash
and gym facilities. Plans are underway to build a swimming pool. The
University houses the
Rausing Executive Centre, which offers a range of executive training
courses and provides an opportunity for the faculty to interact with
leading members of Pakistan’s business community. The Rausing Center also
offers special services which LUMS faculty can avail, including temporary
accommodation for visitors. In addition, there is an on-campus store,
day-care centre and medical facilities.
